While both Jefferson and Jackson were synonymous with SOME portions of American democracy - Jefferson did after all pen the Declaration of Independence, and historians call the years that Jackson presided as president "The Age of Jacksonian Democracy," yet BOTH Jackson and Jefferson were foremost SOUTHERN ARISTOCRAT PLANTER SLAVEOWNERS, answerable to no one but their own autocratic elite of privileged land-owners and slave-plantation owners.
It is a STRUCTURAL SHORTCOMING this current crop of Democratic Senators are all too much an example of.

Sadly, but unsurprisingly, new polls show that the president’s fear-mongering is working. Despite the GOP record of botching the war in Iraq, losing an entire American city and running up the highest deficits in U.S. history, the new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll shows that President Bush and the GOP are surging in popularity, with mid-term elections about six weeks away:
President Bush’s approval rating has reached its highest level since January, helping to boost the Republican Party’s image across a range of domestic and national security issues just seven weeks before this year’s midterm election, a new Times/Bloomberg poll has found.
The survey spotlights a continuing array of Republican vulnerabilities, but it also offers the first evidence in months that the GOP may be gaining momentum before November’s battle for control of Congress.
Democrats hold a lead in the poll, 49 percent to 39 percent, when registered voters are asked which party they intend to support for Congress this year. But that advantage may rest on softening ground: On virtually every comparison between the parties measured in the survey, Republicans have improved their position since early summer.
In particular, Republicans have nearly doubled their advantage when voters are asked which party they trust most to protect the nation against terrorism — the thrust of Bush’s public relations blitz in recent weeks.
Democrats, meanwhile, stand in the hustings wringing their hands, worriedly watching as American democracy and our way of life crumble. They know they are right but they feel helpless to combat the lies with, well, the truth.
The only thing that can stop the GOP from commandeering another election is a bold counter-offensive. But hopes that fearless and decisive leadership will suddenly erupt from the Democrats are starting to fade.
History shows that societies in crisis tend to produce the leaders they need. But history also shows that empires fall when they are corrupted from within. Our leadership today is corrupted by its own power. Conservatives are drunk with power after a 12 year binge. Liberals grasp tenuously at what little power they have. And both sides give way to the bluster, smearing and spin from the Bush Ministry of Fear.
In 2004, the stakes were as high as they could be: If George Bush won re-election, we knew he would stack the Supreme Court with rightwing cronies who would pave the conservatives’ path to authoritarian rule — and today the court is lost for at least two generations.
Now, in the current election, the stakes may be even higher. Our system of laws, our economy and, especially, our place in the world may not be able to withstand another two years like the last six, with President Bush ruling the country unilaterally, unencumbered by oversight from Congress.
We need leaders to step up — to risk everything, if need be — to speak truth to power, to bring an end to the Bush reign of political terror.
And we need this to be done in the next 49 days.
