Republican Party airing despicable last minute TV ads....
The Republicans certainly know NO shame, NO sense of decency, and NO honor. How can you blame them? They picked up Florida's senate seat (from retiring Senator Bob Graham in 2004) by relentlessly protraying the Democratic nominee, Betty Castor, as "AIDING TERRORISTS!"
Castor's crime? She had not fired a University of South Florida Arab professor, accused of donating money to a Palestinian charity that was linked to.... Hamas. In this respect the Republicans and their neo-con strategists certainly would agree with the Nazis in Poland in 1941, who declared "If you supply food to the starving citizens beseiged in the Warsaw ghetto, that makes you a terrorist."
Betty Castor's response to that Republican smear campaign (on behalf of candidate Mel Martinez) was weak, anemic, and non-confrontational, and as with the Republicans throwing mud at Bill Clinton all through the 1990s, if you throw enough mud, some of it will stick.
This election season inFlorida TOPS Martinez's smear-campaign against Castor in 2004. And, again, "Why not?" If smearing an opponent gives you a senate seat, which helps your majority disense and disburse BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars, well, hell, that is one of the great bargains of history - - - a few thousand dollars of smear ads, and complete control of BILLIONS of dollars of the public purse.
In this case, the last minute RNC ad against Democratic gubanatorial candidate Jim Davis STARTS with the sentence, "Democrat Jim Davis HAS MET WITH TERRORISTS!"
That sounds like a pretty drastic accusation, indeed! WHO is the "terrorist" that Jim Davis has met with????
ans.- None other that YASSER ARAFAT, currently DECEASED. Again, by Republican standards, had any of them been living in England in 1776, ALL the patriots, much less signers of the Declaration of Independence, would have been terrorists. We certainly don' t mean to defend the history and career of Yasser Arafat, but there can be no doubt that by those standards, Israel's 5th Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, was certainly a terrorist.**
But the "TERRORIST SUPPORTER!" charge is only one absurd smear in the Republican's arsenal. In another ad, Republican snear that a Democratic candidate has "two mansions" and "made a million dollars from his lobbying career."
THE NERVE of these Republicans...! Exon-Mobile post FORTY BILLION dollars in profits for ONE QUARTER, Exon's chairman retires with a $400 million (FOUR HUNDRED MILLION dollars, or 4/10ths of a BILLION dollars) package, and Jack Abramoff disbursed some of the proceeds from some $12 million in "lobbying fees" to the Republican Congress and White House... FROM ONE GAMBLING CASINO tribe, ALONE!
We have maintained from the start of this blog that if Democrats can not CONFRONT Republican smears and lies on at least some semblance of parity, then America no longer has a functioning democracy, and instead has an "Herrenvolk" democracy where one bloc of people ruthlessly dominates others.
Democratic candidates have, we must aknowledge, done an outstanding job of opposing Republican incumbents and defining the differences between the two parties' agendas.
But Republicans, by saturating the airwaves with gross, blatantly divisive ads, are doing their best to regain the advantage, and at the last 48 hours of the campaign, are practically wallowing in their ability to saturate the air waves with blatantly abusive smear ads.
