Hillary not so inscrutable; joins thousands in protest to Support Israel....
Hillary Clinton is not nearly as indecipherable as some of her critics might imagine. With Hillary, the common denominator is - - - AIPAC.
Wherever AIPAC leads, Hillary boldly follows.
In the case of Abu Grhaib TORTURE, by US military troops, under direct orders from high command, Hillary Clinton IS NOT at the head of any protests or condemnation or even routine objections.
In the case of double, triple, and FOUR tours of duty to Iraq for National Guard and Reserve troops, Hillary is NOT at the head of the protests or even comments.
EVEN in the case of the win-win ("no-lose") issue of FUNDING VETERAN'S REHAB for returning Iraq War combat veterans - the Murray Amendment to fund $2.7 billion for veteran's rehab from the Gulf War; Hillary is essentially playing "silent witness," she voted (along with the entire body of Democratic senators) to fund the bill, but when the Republicans shot it down on a party line vote (must preserve those tax cuts for multimillionaires!), Hillary and the entire Dem. Senate establishment WERE WILLING TO LEAVE IT AT THAT. This issue, ALONE, would deprive Republicans on their self-claimed monopoly "WE SUPPORT THE TROOPS - Democrats DON'T!" Yet the Hillary-Biden-Lieberman-Kerry wing of the Democrat Party REFUSES to go-to-the-mat on the Murray amendment, thereby HANDING the "We support the Troops!" issue to the Republicans.. FOR FREE!
Now, when Israel treats the kidnapping of two soldiers as an excuse to drop (literally) TONS of bombs in Lebanon, (Israel holds FAR MORE than two Lebanese prisoners as hostages - many for years, with NO access to judge or trial) Hillary IS RIGHT THERE OUT FRONT to extend her unconditional support.
Fine. It is good to see the New York Senator actually standing up for something besides CRIMINALIZING FLAG BURNING.
But NO, it is NOT "anti-Semitic" to point out, "AS AIPAC goes, SO GOES HILLARY."
Indeed, an article we read earlier today credits the AIPAC lobby with DEFEATING President George H.W. Bush's reelection campaign in 1992. With a few more districts in the Bush column, it might have made the difference to (prevent) Bill Clinton's election.
Which is fine. Back in 1992, the Clintons and the Democrats were solidly on the side of health care for the public, economic opportunity for all, jobs creation, investment in education, advancement in sciences; environmental protections; WIDER VOTING ENFRANCHISEMENT, and increasing OPENNESS of government, among many other issues.
Today, as personified by Senator Lieberman, the AIPAC LOBBY is almost SYNONYMOUS with the Bush administration agenda - an agenda of DISENFRANCHISEMENT, SECRECY, EXPORTING US JOBS and technology; lies-to-war, torture (which requires secrecy); and above all, the DUMBING DOWN of the press-media so to allow all this corruption, lies, and secrecy with next to no FRONT PAGE confrontation of the BushCo/AIPAC/lieberman (et al.) agenda.
IF Hillary Clinton wants to stand behind the "right" of Israel to drop bombs ALL OVER LEBANON (as George Bush and Dick Cheney maintain that the USA has 'the right' to drop bombs, and sponsor death-squads, NO QUESTIONS ASKED - all over Iraq) WELL, AT LEAST she is finally making a public, visible, leadership stand.
But, Hillary MIGHT want to rethink that "blind allegiance to AIPAC" agenda on all those other issues AIPAC finds itself congruent with the Bush/Republican/radical-right agenda.
The one that finds Hillary SILENT, while bush/cheney/rusmfeld/lieberman/scalia/scaife/murdoch/GE-nbc/AOL/Time-Warner/Viacom/Clear Channel/John Birch Society/PNAC/CATO/American Heritage Foundation/FOX et al. are all in COMPLETE AGREEMENT, and get TONS of ink, and kilotons of paper, to broadcast THEIR views every day.
<< "I want us here in New York to imagine if extremist terrorists were launching rocket attacks across the Mexican or Canadian border, would we stand by or would we defend America against these attacks from extremists?" said Clinton, D-N.Y. "We will stand with Israel because Israel is standing up for American values as well as Israeli ones." >>

NEW YORK -- Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, Jewish leaders and elected officials including Sens. Hillary Clinton and Frank Lautenberg rallied thousands of Israel supporters Monday as fighting continued in Lebanon between the Jewish state and the militant Islamic group Hezbollah.
"I want us here in New York to imagine if extremist terrorists were launching rocket attacks across the Mexican or Canadian border, would we stand by or would we defend America against these attacks from extremists?" said Clinton, D-N.Y. "We will stand with Israel because Israel is standing up for American values as well as Israeli ones."
The rally near the United Nations, one of several being held around the United States this week, was intended to support Israel during escalating Mideast violence. Organizers estimated the crowd at 10,000.
In Lebanon on Sunday and Monday, Israeli warplane attacks killed at least 17 people, while Hezbollah fired rockets that flew farther into Israel than ever before.
President Bush, meeting with other world leaders at the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, has said that Israel has a right to defend itself.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders criticized what they saw as an overreaction by Israel that has caused dozens of civilian deaths and risked a major escalation of bloodshed in the Middle East.
At the rally, Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, said Israel is threatened "by two totalitarian movements, Hamas and Hezbollah, whose unique goal is to destroy the Jewish state."
"Israel defends herself," he said. "And we must say to Israel, 'Go on defending yourself.'"
