This is SO typical of how the Rethuglicans have stolen two presidential elections, and amassed MONOPOLY CONTROL over THE ENTIRE US government over the past decade: EVERY time the Democrats have an issue they COULD *FIGHT* about, some treacherous DLC Senate Dem. "leaders" decide "IT WOULD BE BETTER TO WIMP OUT."
All Republicans must do to force some awful policy, or atrocious nominee, down America's throats, is #1. throw some **** in the face of the Democrats, then #2. backtrack one-half step (in this case, Bolton having NOT been confirmed by the Senate in his first confirmation battle, the Bush admin. merely installs him as a recess appointment), then, #3. let said policy/candidate sit there for a suitable length of time (while America, the press/media, and Democrats get used to that policy/candidate's presence), then #4. the coup-de-grace, REFIGHT THE BATTLE, with even more vitriol and support from the Repub. party and their press-media cohorts. (In the case of Bolton, it was REPUBLICAN Senators who opposed his first confirmation battle. Now they, too, have been 'whipped' into line by the Bush-Rove bully boys.)
'It would be better to ROLL OVER for Bush's barbarous UN nominee, than stand up and put up a fight' has been the decade-old DLC mantra.
Now, clearly a huge, inordinate portion of this battle (or, in the case of Hillary, Schumer, and the DLC Dems, this NON-battle) is that "SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP" between Israel and the United States. Although not all American Jews support the policies of the Likud (right-wing) party of Israel, the Likud party dominates the Israeli-America AIPAC lobby, and once AIPAC determines THEIR policy for American politics, most of America's Jewish voters climb aboard, at least tacitly if not actively.
That means that if the Likud Party and George W. Bush's State department and US military want the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) to drop tons of (US manufactured bombs) all over Lebanon, the AIPAC lobby - and most Jewish voters in America - will soon follow.
JOHN BOLTON is the very personification of that "DROP BOMBS as a FIRST resort!" method of US diplomacy.
He was in the thick of the US death squads in South and Central America during the 1980s (Reagan years), and like so many other Righties (including Bush and Cheney and their tagalong Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice), Bolton believes that a Death Squad body count of 200,000 Guatemalans is an example of "Freedom and Democracy on the march."
Bolton is a fellow traveler of the Bush Ambassador to Iraq, John Negroponte. As AirAmericaRadio host Randi Rhodes points out, Negroponte was SYNONYMOUS with Death Squads in South/Central America, and the moment that he arrived in Iraq, the DEATH SQUAD CORPSES really started filling Baghdad and Iraqi morgues.
Thus it is that Jewish Neo-Cons and the Israel AIPAC lobby FULLY SUPPORT the Negronponte/John Bolton Death Squads agenda, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, now Lebanon, and hopefully (according to the Bolton/Negroponte/neo-con/PNAC playbook) at some time in the future BACK to South America, where the US has already funded one coup against popular election winner Hugo Chavez, and undoubtedly the US Army terror/torture "School of the Americas" (or whatever it has been renamed) is currently drawing up and practicing a dozen plans to knock off Chavez and institute a Pinochet-style "disappearances" purge in Venezuela and other "lefty" Central/South American countries.
THAT IS THE AGENDA that HILLARY CLINTON and CHARLES SCHUMER **SUPPORT.**

Kerry was too clueless or too vapid to respond with the OBVIOUS comeback, "President Bush VOWED to 'GET OSAMA bin LADEN DEAD OR ALIVE," yet Osama is STILL free and commanding attacks on America from an undisclosed locations, because President Bush ALLOWED bin Laden to escape the US noose in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan."
Lieberman, Kerry, Lieberman again, Hillary, Schumer... the DLC Democrats have an ENDLESS SUPPLY of Senators poised and positioned to SABOTAGE the Democratic FIGHT to REGAIN SOME POWER from the Bush-Rove junta.

At 7:30 this morning, John Bolton was having breakfast at Oscar's at the Waldorf with Judy Miller. I wonder whether his upcoming confirmation battle was on the menu. Here's a reminder of what is at stake in this fight: John Bolton, who embodies this administration's dangerous, arrogant, and increasingly costly imperial foreign policy is up for confirmation in mid-September, having failed to be confirmed back in July 2005, and getting his job only because of a presidential recess appointment.
If the Democrats want a simple clear narrative in their opposition to the Bush foreign policy, they must filibuster Bolton's nomination. So far it's hard to find senators on the record on the subject, although we hear that Senators Clinton and Schumer are leaning toward no filibuster. Who among the Democrats has enough moral spine and concern for the safety of this country to take the lead in this looming battle?
