Bravo! Rep Murtha (D) puts cowardly, Chicken**** Republican Rep. in his place...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/06/15/murtha-puts-gop-congressm_n_23119.html

Somewhere along the line, the Democratic 'leadership' has forgotten that PROTECTING ONE's CONSTITUENTS is one of the foremost qualities of a leader. In the case of General (and later president) Andrew Jackson fighting against Cherokee Indians, the Spanish, and then the British, from Tennesse through Florida and to Louisiana, the "PROTECTION" factor of leadership was seen by his Jackson's contemporaries in Tennessee, Kentucky, and all throughout the South, and voters throughout the fledgling USA, as Jackson's MOST IMPORTANT quality. And certainly President Washington is STILL America's most beloved president, because he, too, protected the American nation, the American family, through war, revolution, the civil war (that was the Revolution), and while America was an infant, young nation.

Unfortunately, Democrats have been CRINGING from Republican "SMEAR and FEAR" propaganda attacks for SO LONG, that Democrats seem to FORGET this vital function of political and national L_E_A_D_E_R_S_H_I_P - to PROTECT one's voters, citizens, and constituents!

For the past dozen years, Democrats have genuflected to Right-Wing talking points, to the point where even Pres. Bill Clinton was regarded by some "on the left" as being a "Republican" president, while of course those on the right-wing reprised the ancient mantra of the LYNCH-MOB, namely, that Clinton's less-than-perfect sexual practices entitled the Right-Wing to launch on a MASSIVE DISENFRANCHISEMENT campaign against tens of thousands of voters, those who would tend to vote Democratic or for President Clinton.

(In plain English, by shouting "RAPIST!" and "Liar!" and "Murderer!' and "Drug Smuggler!' and "Draft-Dodger!" and even "Traitor!" and all the other charges shouted against the person of the president, Republicans and Clinton-Haters took it as their "right" to work feverishly to DISENFRANCHISE those who might vote for Clinton or his successor, Al Gore.)

Taking after Clinton's "Welfare Reform" agenda and corporate-friendly fundraising, VP and presidential candidate Al Gore did Clinton a step WORSE. In the 2000 camapaign, Gore was so unwilling to SPEAK OUT FOR children shoved off pre-school, after-school, health-care, and other social program SLASHINGS by Texas Governor George W. Bush, that not only did Gore ALLOW Gov. Bush to campaign generally as "an honest straight shooter," but Gore even ALLOWED Bush to campaign as the would-be "EDUCATION president," Bush's HORRENDOUS Texas education record notwithstanding!

Thus it is that today we find the Democratic Party SO cowed and cringing, that they can't even find themselves able to LINK President Bush to ENRON and KATRINA fraud; or the Republican Party to Abramoff-DeLay and Diebold FRAUD, or Vice President Cheney to HALLIBURTON and Iraq-contracts FRAUD !

Speaking of Diebold, the Democrats are not only unable to make points of business and financial FRAUD from within the Republican Party, but there is barely a chance in hell that the Democrats will actually DO SOMETHING to HELP the TENS OF THOUSANDS of voters DISENFRANCHISED by Diebold-Republican Party DISENFRANCHISEMENT!

Thus it is that we WELCOME and APPLAUD Representative John Murtha going to the well (floor) of the House, and DIRECTLY CONFRONTING a Republican who would SMEAR AND SLIME him as a "cut and run appeaser to terrorists."

In ONE SENTENCE, Mr. Murtha asked the smear-mongering Republican, "WHICH BATTLE DID *YOU* PARTICIPATE IN?" to which the cowardly Republican was forced to run for cover with his tail between his legs.

Note also that, in the midst of SMEARING Murtha as a "cut and run" "terrorist appeaser," Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) also dips into the right-wing propaganda staple, "COMPASSIONATE."

As EVERYONE in America - EXCEPT the Democrats! - well knows, "Compassionate" is conservative CODE-speak for "the good old days of SLAVERY."

When you say "Compassionate" to a "longing-for-Dixie" neo-Confederate Southerner (not all Southerners long for the "good old days of Dixie," of course) the icon or archetype that IMMEDIATELY springs to mind is Confederate General Robert E. Lee astride his war-horse "Traveller." Indeed, there is a huge statue of Gen. Lee astride "Traveller" on the Confederate side of the battlelines at Gettysburg national memorial battlefield, at the spot where General Lee tearfully apologized to the survivors of Gen. Longstreet's assualt on the Union lines during the 3rd day of the Battle of Gettysburg, what is popularily known as "Pickett's charge." This was the archetypical role of Lee as the "COMPASSIONATE" commander, tearfully exhorting his men to sacrifice in the Lost Cause of Dixie. But the flip-side of Lee's wartime steely "compassion," of course, was that he could fight so aggressively for a cause and economic system BASED_ON_SLAVERY.

(Another text-book icon of "compassion" as the right-wing understands it, is found in the movie "Cool Hand Luke" with Paul Newman. There the prison commander forces Newman into torturous, murderous confinement in the "hot shed" in the raging sun without food or water for three days, among other physical tortures. When Luke is again subject to some new torturous punishment, the warden says in his gracious southern drawl, "What we have here... is a failure to communicate." In the right-wing psyche, TORTURE and COMPASSION are conflated, because this is the psychological trick required to justify slavery and other forms of economic enslavement, and the CRUEL violence necessary to sustain such conditions.)

----------------------------------------------

Getting back to the courageous Rep. Murtha and his standing up to the "smear and slime with compassion" tactics of his House adversary, here is the rough transcription from the floor of the US Congress:

"Some have not had nice things to say about our colleague Mr. Murtha and others calling out for our pulling out of Iraq, and I say 'Thank God" for his big heart, and thank God for his compassion.. thank God for his visits to the wounded, thank God for his ministry to grieving families, BUT thank God HE WAS NOT HERE and prevailing after the bloodbaths at Normandy or in the Pacific, or we would be here speaking Japanese or German."

Rep. Murtha: "WAS THE GENTLEMAN AT EITHER THOSE LOCATIONS, WAS THE GENTLEMAN either at Normandy or any of those locations?"...

.... "I said, WERE YOU THERE?" "Were you in Vietnam?" "Were YOU in Iraq"

Rep. Gohmert: "Oh no I wasn't. No sir I wasn't [in Vietnam]. I've been over there [to Iraq]... I wasn't fighting." "I do admire the gentleman's compassion and all that he has done for our wounded."
